Heidelberg was found in the 12th century. Already Romans and Celts settled at the banks of the river Neckar, but only in the 14th century Heidelberg gained in importance: as capital of the Electoral Palatinate, one of the most important German principalities of that time. The Palatinate elector found the university in the year 1386 . At the end of the 16th centure many magnificent Ranaissance buildings were raised in Heidelberg and the medival castle was redesigned as a baronial residence. Like nearly all buildings, the castle was destroyed at the Palatinate succession war in 1689. Then the city of Heidelberg was re-build in Baroque style. Only the castle stayed a ruin and became the symbol of the German Romantic. As one of few German cities Heidelberg survived the 2nd World war nearly untouched.
